He chose to accept a lot of money to not go to court, with good reason
Basically Hugh Grant said he was going to accept the “enormous amount of money” that the Sun newspaper offered him, instead of going to court and maybe getting the same amount but also having to pay quite a lot of money to lawyers and barristers.
Hugh Grant said: “News Group are claiming they are entirely innocent of the things I had accused the Sun of doing – phone hacking, unlawful information gathering, landline tapping, the burglary of my flat and office, the bugging of my car, the illegal blagging of medical records, lies, perjury and the destruction of evidence.”
It’s well known that Murdoch newspaper The Sun used dubious means to get access to celebrity information, they were after scoops and didn’t care if they broke the law to do it, allegedly.
Hugh Grant talks about why he settled out of court on X (formerly Twitter).
So far Murdoch holdings has had to pay out over $AU2 billion in claims to celebrities who claimed they were hacked in some way.
Do you think Hugh is smart to accept this money? Or do you think he should have gone to court to expose everything Murdoch journalists did to him and others?
We’ll never know now, but I think it was really smart of Hugh to take Murdoch’s money. Maybe it will put them out of business soon, the more they have to pay out.
