Pete Davidson spent years telling anyone who would listen that becoming a father was his “dream”. He finally achieved it with model and actress Elsie Hewitt – then their relationship collapsed just five months after she gave birth.
Now Davidson and Hewitt have issued a polished joint statement announcing that they are “cooperatively co-parenting” their seven-month-old daughter, Scottie Rose. Their representatives say the former couple have reached a joint agreement and are committed to giving their daughter love from both parents.
Very mature. Very responsible. Very carefully written by people who charge by the hour.
Unfortunately, the wholesome co-parenting announcement arrived after months of reports about nasty arguments, relentless work travel, disagreements over money and an exhausted new mother telling the internet that she was raising her baby “on my own”.
Whatever happened behind closed doors, this was clearly not the gentle, mutually supportive transition into parenthood Davidson had been advertising.
Pete and Elsie raced into parenthood
Davidson and Hewitt were first publicly linked in March 2025. By May, they were reportedly living together. In July, Hewitt announced she was pregnant and on 12 December she gave birth to their daughter.
By May 2026, the relationship was over.
That means they managed to meet, move in together, become parents and break up in roughly the amount of time some people spend deciding whether to share a Netflix password.
A source later told People that Davidson and Hewitt had already been struggling during her pregnancy. According to the insider, everything happened so quickly that they simply did not know each other particularly well. The same source claimed the eventual split was mutual, although the pair were reportedly not getting along and their early attempts to negotiate co-parenting were “not smooth sailing”. The insider. Sounds very much like Pete Davidson’s publicity, incognito, giving this “insider” intel. That’s not really intel, but rather good PR for Pete. At least they weren’t denigrating Elsie, so that is a suprise.
That is probably the most believable explanation available: two people became intensely involved, had a baby almost immediately and discovered that chemistry, holidays and red-carpet photographs are not the same thing as building a durable family.
Pete Davidson has made an entire romantic career out of moving at the speed of a runaway shopping trolley. The problem is that this time, a baby was placed inside it.
Did Pete dump Elsie? Most likely scenario is, he did

There is no confirmed evidence that Davidson formally ended the relationship himself. People was specifically told that the breakup was mutual. People magazine is where celebrities go to make themselves look good, get their PR rolling and erase any bad publicity.
However, Hewitt’s behaviour immediately afterwards certainly did not resemble that of somebody happily participating in a calm, equally desired separation.
Days after the breakup became public, Hewitt posted a TikTok responding to criticism of her tired appearance. She explained that she had a baby to care for, needed to work and make money and was doing it “on my own”.
When a follower asked whether she also meant she was handling the financial responsibilities alone, Hewitt reportedly replied, “I am :)”, before deleting the comment. She also liked another comment describing a man leaving his partner during the postpartum period as “insanely loser behavior”.
While that does not definitively prove Davidson dumped her. It does suggest that Hewitt felt abandoned, unsupported or deeply angry about the way the relationship ended. And Davidson probably did dump Hewitt. Because it all became too much like responsibility for him. He doesn’t seem to like being a mature adult.
People do not normally like comments calling their ex-partner a loser when they are delighted with their mutually negotiated separation.
His work schedule reportedly became a major problem
The most consistently reported explanation for the breakup is Davidson’s travel and work schedule.
A source told The US Sun that Davidson had been travelling extensively while Hewitt was desperate for more support at home after giving birth. The insider claimed that the disagreement became a wedge between them, with Davidson arguing that he needed to work and earn money.
He attended work-related events in Los Angeles on the weekend of Hewitt’s first Mother’s Day while she reportedly remained at home in Brooklyn. Around the same time, she posted about finally getting her screaming baby to sleep, then realising she had not breathed properly or used the bathroom for hours.
There is nothing wrong with a parent working. There is something deeply unimpressive about leaving the other parent so overwhelmed that she is publicly describing herself as alone.
Paying bills matters, but so do nappies, night feeds, screaming fits, medical appointments and letting the person who recently gave birth take a shower without having to negotiate it like an international peace treaty.
The relationship may have been troubled during the pregnancy
The problems apparently began long before Scottie arrived.
The US Sun claimed Davidson and Hewitt were fighting frequently during their 2025 babymoon and that some arguments became so unpleasant they allegedly started recording each other. Those claims came from anonymous sources and have not been independently confirmed, so they should not be treated as established fact. But they are probably true.
Nevertheless, both People and The Sun separately reported that the relationship was already struggling while Hewitt was pregnant. By “sources” leaking to those publications. Most likely those sources were Pete Davidson’s publicist incognito.
That makes the post-birth collapse considerably less surprising. A newborn did not necessarily destroy a healthy relationship. The baby appears to have arrived in a relationship that was already unstable, rushed and increasingly resentful. But that is just a one-sided argument, so unlikely to be the whole truth.
What about the substance-use rumour?

One of the darker rumours began after Hewitt apparently liked a follower’s comment suggesting that raising a baby alone was preferable to parenting with a partner who was abusing substances.
The like was widely circulated on Reddit and gossip sites. However, Hewitt did not write the accusation herself, did not publicly confirm that it referred to Davidson and later appears to have removed the interaction.
Davidson has openly discussed past substance-use problems and had publicly spoken about getting sober before Scottie’s birth.
The liked comment may have been a deliberate clue. It may have been an emotional reaction to a stranger offering support. It may also have referred generally to Davidson’s known history rather than his condition at that time. But more likely, it was clearly a clue about Davidson not being a suitable parent figure.
The rumour exists, but it remains a rumour. Most likely true.
Pete’s camp insists he paid for everything
After Hewitt suggested that she was parenting and paying for Scottie alone, Davidson’s sources launched an immediate counterattack.
One insider claimed Davidson was covering all expenses associated with Scottie. Another said he was also paying Hewitt’s rent, living expenses and health insurance and had changed his schedule to provide physical and financial support.
There is clearly a major difference between the two versions.
Elsie Hewitt’s version was essentially:
I am exhausted, working and doing this alone
Pete Davidson’s version was:
I am paying for everything and making myself available
As several Reddit commenters observed, being “available” is not necessarily the same thing as performing half of the daily childcare. Sending money does not automatically mean you are sharing the mental load or being present at 3 am when the baby will not settle.
It is possible Davidson was meeting his financial responsibilities while Hewitt was still shouldering most of the exhausting physical work. Both accounts could contain elements of truth. More likely Elsie’s version has more truth than Pete’s.
Reddit was not remotely surprised

The prevailing Reddit response was not shock. It was more along the lines of:
What did anybody think would happen when Pete Davidson had a child when he is still a child himself
Commenters repeatedly focused on how quickly the relationship progressed. They pointed out that Davidson and Hewitt apparently began having problems almost as soon as they became serious, yet continued racing towards parenthood. Others questioned why two adults who barely knew each other would make such a permanent decision.
Another major discussion concerned the difference between financial support and active parenting. Many users were willing to believe Davidson was paying expenses while remaining sceptical that he was doing an equal share of feeding, changing, soothing and organising.
There was also plenty of unfair criticism aimed at Hewitt for choosing to have a baby with him. Other commenters rightly pushed back, arguing that women should not receive all the blame when men fail to live up to the commitments they made.
On X, most viral posts simply repeated Hewitt’s TikTok comments, her deleted financial reply and the “loser behaviour” like.
Pete wanted the title, but was he ready for the job?

Davidson repeatedly said fatherhood was his dream. Once Scottie arrived, he publicly praised Hewitt as a fantastic mother and described becoming a father as transformative.
But fatherhood is not a tattoo beside your ear. It is not an emotional interview, a cute Instagram announcement or a Father’s Day outing when photographers are nearby.
It is repetitive, exhausting work that continues when a relationship becomes difficult and the novelty disappears.
Couples are allowed to separate. Staying in a toxic relationship merely to maintain appearances is not healthy for anybody, including a child. Davidson does not deserve criticism simply because the romance ended.
He deserves criticism because the relationship was rushed into parenthood despite reported problems during the pregnancy, because Hewitt apparently felt abandoned during an extremely vulnerable period and because his team appeared more effective at releasing defensive statements than he had been at convincing the mother of his child that she was supported.
Davidson once complained that he did not want to be known as “this f—ing loser who just dates people”.
Fair enough.
But impregnating a woman you have barely begun dating, allowing the relationship to implode months after she gives birth and then having your representatives explain that you are technically paying the bills is not exactly the rebranding strategy of the century. Pete failed his self imposed assignment. And shows he’s unable to commit to anything.
Their child deserves two dependable parents, not two competing media campaigns. Perhaps Davidson will prove that he can be a committed father even when he is no longer playing the devoted boyfriend.
For now, however, Hewitt’s deleted comments tell a far more revealing story than their sanitised joint statement ever could. And that is – Pete broke up with her and wasn’t around to support her.
