Charles is bestowing history making royal honours to Catherine, William and Camilla

King Charles has announced today, on the Royal family twitter account that there are a number of new appointments in various orders of chivalry which have been made today and which are effective from 23 April 2024.

The King announced these honours would go to his wife, his son and daughter-in-law, among others.

Queen Camilla

Wife, Camilla has received honorific Grand Master of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. The king’s father, Prince Philip and his grandfather, George VI have both been awarded this title. Talk about making it gender neutral!

Prince William

Son, Prince William has received the Great Master of the Most Honorable Order of the Bath, which King Charles previously held himself before he was king.

The Most Honorable Order of the Bath is awarded to members of the military or civil service for “exemplary service,” according to Buckingham Palace’s website.

Catherine, Princess of Wales

Daughter-in-law, Catherine will be receive the Royal Companion of The Order of the Companions of Honor. This is actually history making as she will be the first-ever royal who’s received this honour as a Companion of Honor in the order’s entire 107-year history.

The Order of the Companions of Honor started by King George V (great-grandfather of Charles) in 1917. The Order of the Companions of Honor recognizes outstanding achievements in the arts, sciences, medicine and public service. Some of the most famous people who have received this honour include Sir Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Dame Maggie Smith and Sir David Attenborough.

Interestingly, Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber (yes he’s a lord) has been appointed Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter. Lord Webber received this Garter Knight as the “greatest honour of his life”. He received it for composing the anthem Make a Joyful Noise for the King’s coronation in May 2023.

The Most Noble Order of the Garter is an order of chivalry founded by Edward III of England in 1348. It is the most senior order of knighthood in the British honours system, only outranked by the Victoria Cross and the George Cross.

So who’s loving Charles giving women a formerly male only bastion of appointments? Making it about equality for both men and women.

This is a fabulous way to modernise men only awards.
