She somehow “forgot” to mention her two kids with her former husband Tom Cruise
Nicole Kidman was honoured with a AFI Life Achievement Award in LA on Saturday 27 April 2024. She’s the first ever Australian actress to receive this honour. And only the third non-American born actor to receive this honour. The others are Julie Andrews and Elizabeth Taylor.
Nicole gave a speech, thanking many of the directors she’s worked with, including Baz Luhrmann, Stanley Kubrick, Sofia Coppola.
She said about her co-stars: “Some of them you may never meet again and some of them you do meet again. Some of them you have incredible laughter and jokes with, and you cry with; some of them you fall in love with, some of them you marry.” Given she didn’t say “fall in love with AND marry”, we can be assured she was never in love with Tom Cruise and theirs was a marriage of convenience. Allegedly.
Other luminaries who’ve received this award include – Orson Welles, Bette Davis, Alfred Hitchcock, Gene Kelly, Sidney Poitier, Barbara Streisand, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Denzel Washington.
Some of Nicole’s co-stars roasted Nicole’s AMC ad at the ceremony. They included Morgan Freeman, Meryl Streep, Reese Witherspoon and Naomi Watts. They also attended the gala honour ceremony, so they could be there to see Nicole’s reaction when she saw the video.
Nicole and Tom adopted Isabella in 1992 and Connor in 1995. When they divorced in 2001, they shared joint custody of their adopted kids. After that, the kids stayed with Tom and didn’t have much contact with Nicole afterwards. Or ever since. Allegedly.
Nicole could have tried harder to get access to her adopted kids but clearly she didn’t because they weren’t “their” kids but rather “Tom’s” kids. She probably had to sign an NDA agreeing not to mention them or him in any negative way. Allegedly.
Nicole never mentioned Connor and Isabella in her speech, but referred to her daughters with Urban as “the loves of my life”.
Most, if not all these awards are heavily lobbied by the movie star’s representatives. They are basically “bought” for the stars, so they receive more kudos and exposure and publicity. It helps them with getting more prestigious acting roles.
What do you think? Does Nicole deserve this honour? Or do you think it’s just another fake award that is meaningless?
