Both looking resplendent in their costumes and the jewels for Queen Mary

The Danish King and Queen have released their official portrait after ascending the Danish throne on 14 January 2024, when Frederik’s mother Margrethe II abdicated.

Frederik is looking a bit old and tired, while Mary looks utterly exquisite in her beautiful velvet green dress and all those jewels she’s wearing.

The Queen of Denmark wears the crown jewels, specifically the emerald set. It includes a tiara, necklace, earrings, and a large brooch that can be divided into three parts. The emerald set is one of the 4 jewellery sets available to the Queen. It is usually displayed in The Treasury at Rosenborg Castle. When not in use, the crown jewels are kept in The Treasury’s secured basement under Rosenborg Castle. The Danish crown jewels are unique because they are both exhibited as museum objects and worn by Denmark’s queen.

Queen Mary also wears a brilliant diamond encrusted miniature portrait of The King on her breast, attached to a bow of the Order of Dannebrog ribbon. This is a tradition for female members of the Danish Royal Family. The portrait has a historic lineage passed down through generations of queens.

Frederik’s mother Margrethe II said she abdicated because of recent ill health but since her abdication, she’s been doing so many public engagements. The rumours are that she abdicated so Mary wouldn’t divorce Frederik. According to Danish law, Prince and Princesses can divorce but Kings and Queens cannot. Frederik is alleged to have had an affair with the Mexican socialite and actress Genoveva Casanova. since that allegedly happened, the then Princess Mary has not been happy with Frederik, as has been evidenced by numerous photos of them together where they are undeniably unhappy.

Wishing Mary and Frederik a way forward and resolution. May Frederik never stray again.
